Winter squashes and pumpkins in various colours and sizes surround us in autumn.
Some are odd-shaped, less symmetrical and have very hard rinds. Some others are perfectly round and carry a deep orange colour.
Often cooked to finely puréed soups, pumpkin pies or a savory lentil curry, they are popular in many countries.
Did you know, that the word pumpkin derived from the French word pompon (melon)?
J.K. Rowling wrote: "Raindrops the size of bullets thundered on the castle windows for days on end; the lake rose, the flowerbeds turned into muddy streams and Hagrid's pumpkins swelled to the size of garden sheds.”
